Why is MP4 so much smaller than GIF?

GIF stores every frame as a full, lossless image limited to 256 colours, with no motion compression. MP4 with H.264 encodes only the differences between frames and uses millions of colours, so the same animation is typically 80–95% smaller and looks smoother.

Will the MP4 loop like my GIF?

The file itself does not carry a loop flag, but every place you use it can loop it: add the `loop` attribute to a <video> tag, and Twitter/X, Slack and iMessage loop short MP4s automatically.

Does the MP4 keep the GIF's transparency?

No — MP4 has no alpha channel. Transparent areas are flattened onto black. If you need transparency on the web, keep the GIF or export a WebM/APNG from your editor instead.
