How to record your webcam

01

Turn on your camera

Click Turn on camera and allow access. Pick the camera and microphone you want, and check the live mic meter shows you're audible.

02

Record

Press the red button. A 3-second countdown gives you time to get ready. Pause and resume as often as you like — the pauses are cut out.

03

Watch and download

Press Stop, play the take back, then click Download MP4. Not happy with it? Click Record again.

What people record with it

  • Video messages and replies
  • Video cover letters and job applications
  • Intros for courses, YouTube and LinkedIn
  • Testimonials and quick updates for your team

720p or 1080p?

720p is plenty for messages and social posts and keeps files small: about 30 MB a minute. Choose 1080p for anything you'll edit or show full screen; it's about 60 MB a minute. If your camera can't reach 1080p, it records at its best resolution.

Look better on camera

  • Face a window or lamp — light from behind makes you a silhouette
  • Raise the camera to eye level
  • Leave a little space above your head
  • Look at the lens, not your own face on the screen

Private by design

Most online camera recorders upload your video to their servers to process it. This one never does: the browser records straight to your device's memory, and the file only exists where you save it.

Need your screen in the shot too?

Screen Charm records your screen and your camera together, then lets you choose the layout after recording. Keep yourself as a floating bubble, pin the camera to any edge, or export a split vertical video for Reels, Shorts and TikTok. It zooms in on every click, adds captions and exports MP4 up to 4K — for a one-time $99, no subscription.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I record my webcam online?

Click Turn on camera and allow access when your browser asks. Pick your camera, microphone and quality, then press the red button. After a 3-second countdown the recording starts. Press Stop when you're done, watch it back, and click Download MP4.

Is this webcam recorder free?

Yes. There's no sign-up, no watermark and no time limit. Record as many takes as you like.

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. The recording is made by your browser and stays on your device until you download it. Nothing is sent to a server, so it's safe for private messages, job applications and client videos.

Will I get an MP4 file?

Yes. Chrome, Edge and Safari record MP4 (H.264) directly, so the download is instant. Firefox records WebM, which the tool converts to MP4 on your device when you click Download MP4. You can also save the WebM as is.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes, in Safari on iPhone and Chrome on Android. Choose the front or back camera from the Camera menu. The screen stays awake while you record, and on phones the native MP4 means there's nothing to convert.

Why is my video mirrored in the preview?

The preview is mirrored so it feels like looking in a mirror, which makes it easier to frame yourself. The saved video isn't flipped, so text on your shirt or a sign behind you reads the right way round. Turn off Mirror preview to see exactly what's recorded.

How long can I record?

There's no fixed limit. The recording is held in your browser's memory, so very long takes at 1080p need a device with plenty of free memory. For anything over an hour, 720p is the safer choice.

Can I record my screen and webcam together?

Not with this tool, which records the camera only. Use the free online screen recorder for a screen recording with a webcam bubble, or Screen Charm on Mac for camera layouts, auto-zoom and split vertical videos.
