Merging video clips: what to know
When to merge screen recordings
Recorded a tutorial in several takes, or split a long demo across sessions? Merging joins the pieces into one file for upload, sharing or hand-off to an editor without opening a video editing app.
Matching resolution and frame rate
A single video file can only have one resolution and frame rate, so mixed clips must be brought in line. Match first clip keeps the original look; 1080p or 720p is a good pick when clips come from different devices.
Order and trimming tips
Name your takes with numbers so they sort correctly, then check the order in the list before merging. Trim unwanted seconds from the start or end of a clip first — the merger joins clips as they are.
File size expectations
The output is re-encoded with H.264 at a quality-based setting, so the merged file is usually close to the combined size of the inputs. Choosing 720p or 30 fps makes it smaller; sharp screen text still reads well at 1080p.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I merge videos online for free?
Drop two or more clips into the tool, put them in order with the arrows or by dragging, pick an output resolution and frame rate, and click Merge. The clips are joined back to back into a single MP4 locally in your browser — no upload, no account, no watermark. Click Download when it finishes.
Can I combine clips with different resolutions or formats?
Yes. Every clip is decoded and re-encoded to one common resolution, frame rate and codec (H.264 with AAC audio), so you can mix an MP4 from your phone with a MOV screen recording and a WebM export. The first clip sets the target size unless you choose 1080p or 720p.
Why does one of my clips have black bars?
Clips are never stretched. If a clip has a different aspect ratio than the output — a portrait phone video in a 16:9 export, for example — it is scaled to fit and padded with black on the sides or top and bottom. To avoid bars, merge clips with the same aspect ratio or crop them first.
Is there a limit on the number of clips or the file size?
There is no fixed limit, but everything runs inside your browser's memory. Merging a handful of clips totalling a few hundred megabytes works well on a typical laptop. For very long or very large files, split the job into smaller batches or compress the clips first.
Are my videos uploaded to a server?
No. The merger uses FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly and runs entirely on your device. Your clips and the merged result never leave your browser, which is also why there is no queue and no watermark.
How can I avoid having to merge takes in the first place?
Record in one session instead of several files. Screen Charm lets you pause and resume a recording on your Mac, so you can take a break, switch windows or fix a mistake and continue — the result is a single clip with nothing to stitch together afterwards.
