Why compress screen recordings

Screen recorders capture at a high bitrate so nothing is lost while recording. That is right for the source, but wrong for sharing: a 5-minute 1440p recording can be 500 MB. Re-encoding once with a sensible CRF keeps the text readable and cuts the file by two thirds or more.

Best settings for tutorials and demos

Use the Balanced preset, keep the original resolution if it is 1080p or lower, and drop 60 fps recordings to 30 fps. Most demos have little motion, so 30 fps looks identical and saves a lot. Untick Keep audio for silent recordings.

When to lower resolution vs bitrate

Lower the bitrate first: it keeps every pixel and only trades away detail in busy areas. Lower the resolution when the video will be watched small, such as in a chat or embedded in a doc, or when the bitrate would have to drop so far that text starts to smear. 720p at a healthy bitrate beats 1080p at a starved one.

How much smaller will my video get?

It depends on how the source was encoded. Screen recordings and phone videos are usually recorded at a generous bitrate, so Balanced typically cuts them by 60–70% and Small by around 80%. A file that was already compressed for the web may only lose 10–20%, and can even grow slightly. The tool warns you when that happens.

Is my video uploaded to a server?

No. Compression runs locally with FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. The file never leaves your device, which also means there is no size limit beyond your browser's memory. Long videos simply take longer to encode.

What target size should I use for email, Discord or WhatsApp?

Most email providers cap attachments at 20–25 MB, so aim for 20 MB. WhatsApp compresses anything over 16 MB itself, so target 16 MB. Discord allows 10 MB on free accounts (25 MB on some servers) and 500 MB with Nitro. Slack and Google Drive accept far larger files, so a quality preset is a better choice there.

Will quality drop noticeably for screen recordings?

Rarely with the High or Balanced presets. Screen recordings are mostly static, so H.264 spends its bits on the parts that change and text stays sharp. The Small preset softens fine detail and thin fonts. If you need a pixel-perfect 4K tutorial, record and export it in Screen Charm, which has its own quality slider and never re-encodes twice.

Why is my file still large after compressing?

Three usual causes. The source is long: bitrate times duration is the file size, so a 20-minute video needs a lower bitrate than a 2-minute clip. The source is 4K or 60 fps: cap the resolution at 1080p or 720p and the frame rate at 30 fps. Or the video has lots of motion, like gameplay or camera footage, which needs more bits than a screen recording. Target size mode handles all of these by computing the bitrate for you.
