Rotate and flip explained
Rotate vs flip
Rotation turns the whole picture around its centre — 90°, 180° or 270°. A flip mirrors it across an axis without turning it. A horizontal flip fixes backwards text; a 180° rotation fixes an upside-down clip.
Fixing sideways iPhone/Android videos
Phone videos carry a rotation tag that some players ignore, so a portrait clip lands on its side. Rotating here bakes the correct orientation into the pixels and clears the tag, so it plays upright in editors, browsers and chat apps.
Mirror webcam footage
Webcam previews are often mirrored so you feel natural on camera, but the recording may show text and logos reversed. Turn on Flip horizontal to un-mirror it in one step.
Quality settings
Original (CRF 18) looks identical to the source and is the largest file. Balanced (CRF 23) is the default for sharing. Small (CRF 28) cuts size further with slight softening. Audio is copied as-is when the MP4 container allows it.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I rotate a video online for free?
Drop your MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM or AVI into the tool, pick 90° clockwise, 180° or 90° counter-clockwise, and check the live preview. Click Rotate video and download the MP4. There is no upload, sign-up or watermark.
Why does my phone video play sideways, and how does this fix it?
Phones record in one fixed orientation and store a rotation tag in the file's metadata instead of rotating the pixels. Players that ignore the tag — some browsers, editors and chat apps — show the video sideways. This tool re-encodes the frames in the orientation you choose and resets the tag, so the video plays upright everywhere.
Does rotating reduce video quality?
Rotation itself is lossless — pixels only move. The video is re-encoded to MP4 afterwards, which is where quality could change. Original quality (CRF 18) is visually identical to the source; Balanced and Small trade a little detail for a smaller file. Audio is copied without re-encoding whenever possible.
Is my video uploaded to a server?
No. Everything runs locally in your browser with FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. Your file never leaves your device, and there is no size limit beyond your browser's memory.
Can I flip or mirror a webcam recording?
Yes. Turn on Flip horizontal to mirror the picture, which un-mirrors webcam footage where text appears backwards. Flip vertical turns the picture upside down, and flips can be combined with any rotation.
Can I rotate only part of a video?
Not in this tool — the rotation applies to the whole clip. Trim the section you want to rotate first, rotate that clip here, then join the pieces in your editor.
